Video Poker is a popular game that usually will be enjoyed in casinos around the world, or alternatively at home on your personal computer, using an Internet connection. The game rules are very simple and involve the player trying to achieve the best combination of cards possible in order to win money. In this respect it is very similar as a normal game of poker, without the interaction with other players. Of course, techniques employed during a real-life game of poker, like tricking, will be useless here.

The game of Electronic Poker begins when the gambler puts credits (whether it is tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and presses the play button. A hand of five cards will then be "given out" on the screen.

The Electronic Poker machine also has buttons with ‘hold’ written on them, and bettors will need to now pick which cards to hold and which to throw away. For the cards the gambler wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they light up. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they want, from all to none.

After the enthusiast has selected which cards he would like to keep, they should press ‘draw’, which will mean that any new cards will be handed out if desired. The game is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands listed in the pay out schedule.

Normally, the lowest succeeding hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money increasing for each and every better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It goes without saying that the payment schedule can range from game to game, so that skillful players are agile enough to pick the most profitable game each time.

After the first round has completed, the player can either choose to stay on in an attempt to maximize their winnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any money that has been won. Further, some versions of the game allow the gambler an opportunity to double their profits, in which situation a further round is played. There are also differences among specific machines, with some virtual decks including wild cards and other differing characteristics to increase playability.
